Apron made from men's shirt

Gauyabera Apron

A couple of months ago I woke up one Sunday and decided I had to spend the day rummaging through bins of vintage mens’ shirts and then make aprons out of them. I have no idea where I got the idea – maybe I was having a very bizarre dream (we have been watching a lot of Dexter lately – Florida, Cuban-culture, Guayaberas…maybe?) But unlike most creative impulses I get, I actually followed through with this one and made 3 aprons that I’m pretty psyched about.  I got really inspired by the Guayaberas with their pin tucks and cool pockets, which could be mixed and matched on the aprons.

Amy dress

Can’t get away from Amy Butler! This is a dress I made for all the various summer weddings on our calendar.  I’ll put a better photo up soon. This was taken on top of the California Academy of Sciences, where the rehearsal dinner was held. You can see the cool green roof domes in the background. The dinner’s theme was “casual tropical”, which we didn’t know until the day of, but luckily I never leave the house without a casual tropical outfit on hand.

Blue tote strap detail

This is a quick pattern from the Amy Butler book In Stitches. Sewing the leather straps together was a bit of a task. I wrestled with them for a few hours, attacking it with every sharp, pointy object I could find in the house – screwdrivers, scissors, knives, my nose, pens, needles. I managed to get some holes in the ends, but they’re not the strongest straps.

Purse

It hasn’t stopped raining in 3 days and, as a result, the crafter in me is coming out again. Here’s a bag I made using the Wasp Bag Pattern that was on Craftzine a few months ago. Also had enough remaining fabric to make a pillow!

Baby things

I’m not usually this much of a Martha, but it’s been cold and gross here the last few weeks and it’s hard to leave the house. These are gifts I made for my friend in Montana who’s about to have her second child. The baby sling looks funny in the photo because there’s no baby in it. I tried to put a pillow in it, but that looked weirder. The baby onesies have pieces of fabric that I cut out and sewed on the front. I made them because I had a bunch of spare onesies–kind of an odd thing to have on hand. I wanted to buy just one for a friend to make a gag gift, but apparently they’re like Jockey briefs, you have to buy a 5-pack.
